Common Questions About Devon Aerials, TV Installations and Repairs

Do I need a new aerial, or can my existing one be repaired?

Not every job needs a brand new aerial. Quite often, a sensible aerial repair is all that is needed. I regularly find that the real fault is a worn bracket, damaged coaxial cable, a poor joint, a loose flylead, water getting into a connection, or an aerial that has shifted slightly in the wind.

If the aerial itself is still sound and the signal readings are otherwise good, it often makes far more sense to repair what is there rather than replace the whole system. I always prefer that approach where possible. My job is to recommend what is right for the customer, not simply what is most expensive. Sometimes a solution is very simple, and free! I’ve written a down-to-earth guide to some simple TV Signal fixes which might be helpful.

What are the signs that my aerial may need attention?

The most common symptoms are pixelation, intermittent “no signal” messages, channels disappearing, certain stations breaking up while others remain fine, or reception getting worse in bad weather. Sometimes the problem affects every TV in the house. Sometimes it only affects one room, which can point to a wall plate, cable run, splitter or indoor connection issue rather than the aerial itself.

If your picture has gradually become unreliable, or if the problem started after strong winds or heavy rain, it is definitely worth having it checked properly. A quick look is not always enough. Signal testing usually tells me quite quickly whether the issue is the aerial, the cabling, an amplifier, or the television setup.

Will a set-top aerial work for Freeview?

Sometimes, yes, but in general a properly installed external aerial is much more reliable. Set-top aerials can work in the right circumstances, especially where signal is naturally strong, but they are much more affected by where they are positioned, the type of property, the walls in the room, nearby roofs and even electrical interference inside the home.

If you want the best chance of stable Freeview reception, especially on more than just the main channels, a rooftop or loft aerial is usually the better solution. Indoor aerials can be handy, but they are rarely the most dependable answer in the long run.

Will I have to throw out my TV, especially if it’s old?

No, not usually. A lot of older televisions can still be used perfectly well with the right box, adaptor or connection method. People sometimes assume the TV itself is no good anymore when in reality it simply needs the right setup to work with modern digital equipment.

If your television is older and you are unsure whether it can still be used, I can advise on the most sensible option. Sometimes it is absolutely worth keeping. Other times, especially if the set is very awkward to connect or already unreliable, it may make more sense to upgrade. Either way, I will tell you honestly.

★★★★★ Geoff was brilliant. On time, got my puppy under control in seconds and then got me back TV reception – better than I had before it had problems. 5 Star service and highly recommend

Why do some Freeview channels break up while others are fine?

This is a very common question. Freeview channels are broadcast in groups, and those groups do not always come in equally strongly. That means you may have perfect BBC channels but poor ITV or Channel 4 services, or the other way around. It does not necessarily mean your television is faulty.

The cause might be aerial alignment, the wrong aerial type, damaged cable, water ingress, too much signal, not enough signal, or problems with a splitter or amplifier. It can also be affected by the particular location of the house. That is one reason local knowledge matters. Reception conditions are not identical across Exmouth, Topsham, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth, even though they are all within the same broader area.

Can you install a TV on the wall?

Yes, absolutely. We do a lot of TV wall mounting, from straightforward bracket fitting to complete installations where the television, soundbar, Freeview box and other devices are all set up properly at the same time. A good wall-mounted TV should look neat, feel secure and be positioned at a sensible height for comfortable viewing.

Different walls need different fixing methods, and that matters. Solid walls, stud walls and chimney breasts all need to be approached properly. The aim is always to mount the TV safely, level and neatly, without taking shortcuts.

Can wires be hidden when a TV is wall mounted?

In many cases, yes. A lot of customers want the cleanest possible finish, especially in lounges, bedrooms and freshly decorated rooms. Depending on the wall and the layout of the room, cables can often be routed more neatly, trunked discreetly or taken to a more convenient point.

I always try to leave installations looking tidy and sensible rather than like an afterthought. Some customers are happy with a practical and safe finish; others want the neatest possible appearance. I am happy to advise on both.

Can you add extra TV points in another room?

Yes. If you would like television in a bedroom, kitchen, loft conversion, extension or garden room, I can install extra signal points and make sure the signal is distributed properly. That may involve checking whether the existing aerial feed is strong enough to split, or whether better cable or amplification is needed.

Done properly, this gives a much more reliable result than a tangle of cheap splitters and patch leads. If more than one television is being fed from the same aerial, it is important to make sure the system is balanced correctly.

Do I need a signal booster or amplifier?

Not always. A booster is not a cure-all. In some properties it helps a lot, but in others it can actually make reception worse if the signal is already strong or if the real problem lies elsewhere. That is why proper testing matters so much.

Sometimes the answer is a masthead amplifier. Sometimes it is replacing damaged or old cable. Sometimes the best fix is actually removing a faulty booster that has been causing the problem in the first place. I prefer to diagnose the cause rather than throw extra equipment at it and hope for the best.

Should I choose Freeview or Freesat?

That depends on the property, the signal and what you want from the system. In many homes, Freeview through a good aerial works perfectly well and gives a very straightforward setup. In other homes, especially where terrestrial reception is awkward or inconsistent, Freesat can be the better answer.

I do not push one solution for every property. I prefer to look at the home, test the signal where needed, and advise on the most sensible route. Sometimes an aerial repair is enough. Sometimes a different reception method gives a better long-term result.

What if my picture goes off in bad weather?

If the television breaks up every time the weather turns poor, that usually suggests an underlying weakness in the system. It might be a slightly moved aerial, a tired bracket, exposed cable, water ingress, or a connection that only just works in calm conditions.

A good aerial system should not fall apart every time there is rain or wind. In coastal and exposed areas such as parts of Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth, installations do need to be done properly and securely. My aim is always to leave customers with something dependable, not something that only works on a dry day.

Can you help if the TV says “no signal”?

Yes. “No signal” can mean several different things. It may be a genuine aerial fault, but it can also be the TV on the wrong source, a loose cable, a dead amplifier power supply, a failed wall plate or a retune that has wiped the stored channels.

That is why I work through these jobs methodically. I check the settings, the leads, the signal level and the system itself. In many cases, once the right checks are done in the right order, the problem becomes fairly clear.

Should I retune my TV if I lose channels?

Not necessarily. Retuning is often the first thing people try, but it is not always the right move. If the signal has dropped out because of a fault, retuning can sometimes make matters worse by deleting the correctly stored channels. Then, once the original problem is fixed, the set still has to be tuned back in properly.

As a general rule, if everything was working normally and then suddenly channels disappeared or the picture started breaking up, it is often better to investigate the cause first rather than immediately retuning.

Can you set up a new TV for me?

Yes, and this is something we do regularly. A new TV setup can include assembling the stand, tuning channels, connecting it to the aerial or satellite feed, linking it to the Wi-Fi, setting up catch-up apps, pairing a soundbar and making sure the remote controls are working as they should.

For many people, buying the television is the easy part and the setup is the frustrating bit. If you would simply like everything installed properly and working neatly, I am very happy to help.

Do you help with Smart TVs and streaming services?

Of course! If your Smart TV is confusing (you’re not to blame, they can be ridiculous!), not connecting properly, or simply not doing what you expect it to do, I can help get it sorted. Some customers want help with Wi-Fi setup, others with apps and streaming services, and others just want somebody to make sense of the menus and connections.

If you need help with smart TV installation, that’s no problem at all.

Can you help with soundbars and audio leads too?

Yes. Modern TV jobs are often about more than just the screen itself. Customers may want a soundbar connected, a DVD player or streaming box linked up, or cables arranged more neatly. We are happy to help with the wider setup so that everything works together as it should.

The goal is simple: when I leave, the system should be easy to use, tidy and working properly.

Do you only work on houses?

No. We also help with flats, bungalows, extensions, rental properties, holiday accommodation, caravans and new build homes. If you need help with a caravan setup, you can read more about our caravan aerials. If you need a full installation for a recently built property, we also carry out new build aerials.

★★★★★ I was badly let down by a large aerial installation company, and phoned Geoff out of desperation. True to his word he came out later that day. I have a tricky aerial setup, and Geoff promptly and methodically tracked down and fixed the problem (a part incorrectly installed by a previous company).

I will definitely use Geoff for any other requirements and recommend him strongly – well done Geoff!
